If I give her something good to eat, get some play time in during the day, and make sure she’s comfy & secure while napping, do you think I’m providing the daily essentials for a happy dog?
Of course there are other things to consider, like health care, but on a daily basis, is there something else to keep in mind that a dog might need (that humans don’t usuallu think of)?
Thanks : )

Mental stimulation would be a good one to add. I think we often forget that dogs like to learn (just like people,) and keeping their brains thinking is an essential. This could include teaching new commands/tricks, playing games that requires the dog to think, and personally, I talk to my dogs…amazing how fast they learn to recognize key words in my conversations.
they are in mine!
at least 2 good walks every day – time depends on the breed
yup, I would agree … if it were not for the risk of abandonment and death at a shelter or of starvation .. I would think that “dogs life” would be one step below Nirvana
What about mental stimulation??….what are you teaching your dog?? You don’t say anything about breed or age, but many dogs are intelligent and very intuitive. Expand your pup’s vocabulary… when discouraging something, like biting, say, “no bite” instead of just “no”. Expanded, “no jump, no lick, no bark” and so on. And, if you have specific toys for your pup…..you might want to name them. Play ‘hide + seek’ with your pup’s toys and eventually ask for specific ones by name. Can be lots of fun for both of you!!
Wow, you sound like a good mommy just remember the love!
Do you share cuddle time with your doggie?
I like to sit down on the couch or on the floor with my Doberman on the weeknds, and just sit in sweat pants and a “I love my doberman shirt” and watch Oprah, maury, or a good love story. And my dobie is either on my lap (well actually a quater of his body, hes a horse!) or on the couch spread out and trying to shove me off. And we share a bag of chips and he watches me cry my eyes out. Its those times I love him sooo much because hes like my best friend. Hes at an age where hes JUST like a teenager, and im 16 so we both like to be lazy and eat together, I think thats why we get along so well. I thinks its important for every one to have a “special time” with their dog.
What I would add to your list is at least a little bit of daily training. Even something as simple as requiring your dog to sit before a meal or drop a toy on command keeps her mind on her manners and her focus on you. And, she wants to please you, so when she gets it right, make sure to give some love and praise in return!
