I need a vacuum for my hardwood floors and tile floors, with a couple area rugs. I have 2 dogs and 2 cats, so it needs to be great a pet hair and dog food pieces/litter pieces. Thanks for your input! I cannot afford a really expensive vacuum, and my home is only 1400 sq feet.

A Dyson! They’re expensive but you might be able to find a good used one online somewhere.
The small shop vacs that have the strap you can put over your shoulder work great. Just be sure to use the wand that has the soft bristle bottom. Also, these are much cheaper than Dyson and probably have 2 times the suction.
